CREW LEAD – BUILDING ERECTOR

Full-time$37–$43/hrCalgary, Red Deer, Stettler, Edmonton, ABField Operations

About the Role

This role is for someone who doesn’t need to be managed. You take ownership of your crew’s work from mobilization to closeout: quality, safety, schedule, and people. No excuses, no shortcuts.

Metalex is looking for a Crew Lead to run field erection crews across Alberta. You’ll lead 3–6 builders on self-framing steel buildings, foam panel systems, and rigid frame structures for commercial, industrial, and energy clients. You will be the most senior person on the build site and Metalex’s face with the client.

If you’ve got the field experience, and the leadership instinct to match, this is your opportunity to step into the highest-impact role in the field.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead a crew of 3–6 builders through all phases of steel building erection: planning, layout, framing, paneling, trim, accessories, and final inspection
  • Read and interpret engineered erection drawings, project specifications, and erection manuals without support
  • Plan and coordinate daily work assignments, material staging, equipment deployment, and crew workflow
  • Own site safety: run daily tailgate meetings, enforce PPE, conduct hazard assessments, and document any incidents or near-misses
  • Serve as the primary on-site contact for clients, general contractors, and site personnel—represent Metalex professionally at all times
  • Mentor Helpers and Journeymen on your crew; identify gaps in skill and knowledge and close them
  • Maintain complete and accurate project documentation: inspection records, daily logs, punchlists, change tracking, and closeout
  • Escalate schedule, quality, or safety issues to the General Manager with context and a recommended path forward

What You’ll Bring

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience erecting self-framing steel and rigid frame metal buildings
  • 2+ years of proven experience leading a field erection crew in a Foreman, Lead, or Crew Lead capacity
  • Demonstrated ability to read and execute from engineered erection drawings with accuracy and confidence
  • Fall Protection certification (required)
  • CSTS 2020 (required)
  • AWP / EWP / Man Lift certification (required or to be obtained immediately upon hire)
  • Strong client communication and professional on-site presence
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence with a clean abstract
  • Willingness to lead crews from base locations in Calgary, Red Deer, Stettler, and Edmonton; travel and away work required
  • Ability to pass a drug and alcohol screening as required by client sites

What Metalex Offers

  • $37–$43/hr based on experience
  • Company crew truck allocated for use after successful completion of probationary period
  • Living Out Allowance (LOA) for away-from-home work
  • Monthly phone allowance
  • Extended health benefits including health, dental, and life insurance (following probationary period)
  • Health Spending Account (HSA)
  • Access to 175+ personal and professional development courses
  • Certification support and training reimbursement where applicable
  • Real influence over how your crew operates and develops — we back our Crew Leads
  • Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP)
  • A company that promotes from within and holds every level of leadership to the same standard
