Insulation, Liners & Partition Walls in a Self-Framing Building
A self-framing envelope is just the start. Insulation, liners, and partition walls turn the shell into a working industrial space, and they stay within the same drawing package.
Once the panel shell is up, the questions turn to the inside. How warm does it need to be? What goes on the walls? Can one building hold two or three separate spaces? A self-framing building answers all of those without leaving the system, which keeps the design in one drawing package.
Insulation options
Fiberglass batt is the standard, giving R-12 to R-20 in the walls. Roof assemblies can achieve R-50 or more with deeper cavity systems and insulation clips, which matters when the building is heated through an Alberta winter. Where the application calls for more, rock wool adds fire resistance and sound attenuation, which is relevant near rotating equipment or anywhere noise control is required.
Interior liners
The interior finish is chosen to match how the building gets used. Aluminum or steel corrugated liner is the standard industrial choice, durable and easy to clean. Gypsum board is used where a fire rating or an office-quality finish is needed. Plywood suits utility and light workshop interiors. Interlocking PVC is the choice for wash-down applications.
Partition walls: multiple zones in one envelope
A self-framing building can be divided into multiple independent spaces using Metalex's partition wall system. It is 22-gauge C and Z channel framing with interior liner panels on both faces, and a continuous polyethylene vapour barrier sealed at the seams.
The result is that a single envelope can contain separately conditioned or functionally divided spaces without requiring a second building. That is how one shell becomes, for example, a heated control room next to an unconditioned equipment bay.
Self-framing or foam panel?
For smaller envelopes, an uninsulated self-framing building is more cost-effective than a foam panel building, up to approximately 12 feet wide by 20 feet long. Beyond that size, the comparison depends on the thermal specification you actually need. Metalex's foam panel system delivers approximately R-8 per inch of thickness, which can be the better path when the thermal target is demanding.
