Same tier, different mechanism
It helps to know where these systems sit. Steel building systems, often called pre-engineered metal buildings, are manufacturer-designed and manufacturer-fabricated integrated systems. The manufacturer holds responsibility for the structural design under a controlled quality program, CSA A660, and the building is supplied as a complete package.
Self-framing is a sub-type of that category, and rigid frame is another. Both are CSA A660-certified pre-engineered systems. They differ in how they carry load, and that difference dictates which one is right for your project. Self-framing carries load through a panel diaphragm with no separate skeleton. A rigid frame carries load through a beam-and-column moment frame.
